Since 1870, high-quality clay has been extracted in the Lannach-East area, which was processed in a brick factory. This brick factory is now closed and clay extraction has ceased. Of the former 30 brick ponds, 19 water-filled ponds remain. Over time, these have been gradually overgrown by aquatic plants and swamp trees, and interesting animals have settled in the water and along the shore zones.
From the former clay pits, largely untouched by humans, a "second-hand habitat" has developed, which is among the most notable wetlands in Austria. In the Lannach Pond Park, the focus is primarily on nature conservation and nature experience: The southern part with ponds, alder swamps, and stork meadows is designated as a protected landscape reserved for nature. The northern part serves as a nature trail for residents, visitors, but especially for school classes in the region.
Some ponds are used by the ice shooting club and the Graz Workers' Fishing Association as fish ponds, boating ponds, or simply as leisure ponds.
In 1997, under the expert direction of the head of the Institute for Nature Conservation, Univ.-Doz. Dr. Johannes Gepp, educational trails and an outdoor classroom were created, successfully making a pond park accessible to everyone while simultaneously preserving particularly worthy natural areas.
