Mausoleum der Eggenberger

The Eggenberger Mausoleum in Ehrenhausen an der Weinstraße is located on an artificially created terrace on the Schlossberg above the village. It was commissioned in 1609 by Ruprecht von Eggenberg, an imperial field marshal, as a tomb for himself and his family and was only completed several decades later. The complex is considered a significant example of Mannerist architecture in Austria and was realized according to a design by Pietro de Pomis. The front facade, with its triumphal arch-like portal and monumental guardians of the grave, emphasizes the military merits of the client. Since 1920, the mausoleum has been owned by the state of Styria, is under monument protection, and is scientifically and conservatively maintained. The mausoleum is accessible from the outside; interior visits are possible as part of guided tours.
