About the Eggenberg Mausoleum

Ruprecht von Eggenberg (1546-1611), an older cousin of the first Prince Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg, was a celebrity of his time. In military service for the Spanish crown, he had made a name for himself in the Netherlands under the command of Alexander Farnese. However, his spectacular victory over the Ottoman Beylerbey Hassan Pasha at Sissek in 1593 made him famous throughout Europe and the commander of the southern military frontier in the so-called Long Turkish War.

Near his castle in Ehrenhausen he had a mausoleum built after 1609, which was to perpetuate this fame even after his death.

However, the construction, which was based on a model by Pietro de Pomis, quickly stalled after Ruprecht's death in 1611 and was not completed until two generations later in the 1680s. Since 1920, the mausoleum has been owned by the Province of Styria and is under the conservational and scientific care of the Eggenberg Palace & Old Gallery Department at the Joanneum Universal Museum.
