Attemsmoor - Naturpark Juwel

The Attemsmoor in the market town of Straß in Styria hosts an extraordinary wildlife and plant world. A secured moor path leads through the protected wetland and allows for nature observations along the trails as well as from observation towers. Information boards explain the formation of the moor and provide insights into its unique habitats.

Typical moor plants such as sphagnum moss, narrow-leaved cotton grass, spotted orchid, swamp irises, and the carnivorous sundew characterize the area. Numerous animal species, including frogs, grass snakes, insects like dragonflies, and many bird species, are native here. A special natural phenomenon is the moor frog, whose males turn blue during mating season.

The approximately 15-hectare Attemsmoor is the only non-alpine moor in the Murtal region. It originated from a flood moor on alluvial gravel soil and developed into a permeable moor along the Lindenbach stream. Despite the climate of southern Styria being rather unsuitable for moor formation, the Attemsmoor holds significant ecological importance and is designated as an area of national value in the Austrian Moor Protection Catalogue.
