Open air museum Stübing

Gratwein-Straßengel

As the largest and only national open-air museum in Austria, it displays the formative historical architectural styles of the various federal provinces.

What is there to see? With its 100 historical buildings, the Austrian Open-Air Museum Stübing is one of the 10 largest museums of its kind in Europe. "Anna eats an apple" is written on the blackboard of the village school, but today's children can no longer read the writing. It is a lost world of rural life and work that lives on in the historic farm buildings in a quiet side valley of the Mur. Here you can hike through the whole of Austria on leisurely paths and learn lots of interesting facts about Styrian history and the typical regional tools, building methods and lifestyles of our ancestors in an idyllic natural setting. Who knows what a Rauchkuchl is?

What were the huge iron pans hanging on the houses used for?

From the charcoal pile to the wine press, from the square farmhouse decorated with sgraffito from Upper Austria to the post barn from Tyrol built to be hostile to mice - time and again, you make surprising discoveries in the Austrian Open-Air Museum and your respect for the ingenuity of our ancestors, who knew how to combine purpose and aesthetics wonderfully in their buildings and tools, grows.

How it all began!

The Austrian Open-Air Museum Stübing was founded in 1962 by Professor Viktor Herbert Pöttler, a humanities scholar from Graz, with the support of the federal government and all Austrian provinces. In decades of work, with a great deal of commitment and passion, Professor Pöttler tracked down typical regional residential and farm buildings, mills, wayside crosses and craftsmen's workshops throughout Austria, most of which were threatened with destruction. The buildings were dismantled piece by piece in their original locations and rebuilt in Stübing using traditional craftsmanship methods.Today, the hundred or so buildings blend naturally into the 60-hectare wooded valley as if they had always been here. The Stübing Open-Air Museum is undoubtedly one of the most important sights in Styria.

Not at all museum-like and bland, but full of life!

From the thatched Burgenland farmhouse to the West Styrian grocer's store and the huge alpine hut from Vorarlberg. Old household items fill the fully furnished rooms, original tools are on display. Flowers from the colorful home gardens are on the tables, sheep and goats graze in the meadows. And here and there, a carver, a basket weaver and a woman at the spinning wheel can be seen over the shoulder.

Adventure, games and fun for children

History and the past can be quite exciting. When children immerse themselves in the life, work and everyday life of the past, they often have some really amazing experiences. As part of the varied children's activities, historical knowledge is imparted in a fun and playful way during special children's museum tours, children's afternoons, hands-on stations, vacation weeks in summer and the children's adventure day.

Be actively involved and try it out!

The traditional events, courses and museum workshops, themed days and lectures are mainly geared towards the rural festivals throughout the year. Visitors become part of the past rural world, whose culture and traditions they get to know and appreciate, and can try their hand at traditional craftsmanship, e.g. making shingles, baking bread, doughnuts and strudel, carving spoons, spinning...

Good food, good everything

Hunger and thirst don't stand a chance here! Of course, a real inn is part of it, where people cook the way they used to and ready-made products are not used in the kitchen or on the table! In the historic inn "Zum Göller", typical dishes from Styria and the Austrian federal states are served in a cozy atmosphere according to the season.
