Discover three extraordinary church buildings in Styria in the Graz Region.
On the occasion of the Holy Year 2025, which has the motto ‘Pilgrims of Hope’, this special excursion invites you on a journey of discovery through the diversity of sacred architecture in Styria. On 6 September 2025, you will start at 2 pm and experience three impressive churches that combine tradition and modernity in a unique way until around 7 pm.
The first stop is the Schutzengelkirche in Graz-Eggenberg. This church was planned by Werner Hollomey and artistic elements by Manfred Gollowitsch and Edith Temmel.
The tour continues to St James' Church in Thal near Graz, designed by Ernst Fuchs, a representative of Fantastic Realism. The church, newly consecrated in 1994, impresses with its colourful and symbolic design.
The third item on the programme is St. Barbara's Church in Bärnbach, redesigned by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The church unites different religions through twelve symbolic gates and displays Hundertwasser's characteristic colourful and organic architecture.
Finally, visit the nearby Moses Fountain, also designed by Ernst Fuchs. The fountain impresses with a bronze figure of Moses and a basin decorated with glass mosaics and pebbles.
For a sweet finish, a regional speciality awaits you in the Lipizzanerheimat: the ‘horse apple’ from the sugar mill.
