More information

East: From Vienna on the A 2 and S 6 to Leoben and St. Michael i. d. O., continue on the S 36 to Judenburg and on the B 96 to Murau. From Murau via Ranten to Krakow. From Graz on the A 9 to St. Michael i. d. O.. Further see above.

West, north: From Bregenz/Innsbruck via the A 12, A 93 and A 8 to Salzburg. From Salzburg on the A 10 to St. Michael im Lungau. From here on the B 96 to Tamsweg and on towards Murau via Sauerfeld to Krakau.

South: From Klagenfurt on the B 83 to Scheifling. Then on the B 96 to Murau and further into the Krakau.

From Gasthof Etrachsee, walk north on the forest road along the eastern (right) shore of the lake to Moaralm and continue to the fork Hubenbauertörl/Rudolf Schoberhütte. Continue north (right) towards Grafenalm and follow the slightly ascending forest road to the fork in the footpath to Rudolf Schoberhütte. Continue on the forest road for about 400m in the direction of Grafenalm until a forest road coming from the south meets the forest road in the direction of Grafenalm.  Then you branch off to the south (right); after about 100m you leave this forest road to the east (left). From here, follow the marked trail through a rather steep high forest, which soon changes into a pine and larch forest, until you reach the stream coming from the Spreitzerkar. After crossing the stream, the trail leads through mountain pine stands to the entrance to the large Spreitzer cirque. Across moderately ascending alpine pastures, the trail leads in an easterly direction (half-right) through the Spreitzer cirque to the rocky region. Turn right in the direction of an alpine pasture and continue slightly ascending for a few hundred meters in a southerly direction. Now the trail leads to the east, towards the summit over relatively steep grassy slopes and turns towards a conspicuous mountain pine saddle. Across steep, rocky terrain you finally reach the summit ridge, the continuation of the Leitenriegel. Passing a survey point, the trail follows the course of the ridge to Nod East to the summit of the Rupprechteck, 2,591m.

The way back is from the Rupprechteck moderately descending along a path to the south in the direction of Arfeld, 2,491m. The trail passes below the Arfeld summit, passes a pasture fence made of stones and crosses a mountain slope to the east to the Scharte, where the Brennerfeldeck/Rupprechteck and Etrachsee trails fork above the Schattnerhütte. From the Scharte, the trail leads to an idyllically situated small mountain lake, with views of the glaciated peaks of the Hochalmspitze and the Ankogel. Across steep alpine pastureland, past a wayside shrine, the trail leads to the tree line and on to the Schattnerhütte, 1,799m. Follow the forest road to the southeast, slightly descending to the stream. Continue on the forest road to the west in the direction of Etrachsee until you reach a right turn. Here the footpath leaves the forest road and leads slightly downhill through high forest terrain to the south-west until it crosses the forest road. The path continues over somewhat steeper high forest terrain over several serpentines to a forest road. Follow the forest road to the south (left) for about 300m until you reach a fork in the forest road. To the north-west (right) slightly descending, past an alpine pasture to the access road to the Etrachsee. Continue north (right) approx. 200m to the starting point "GH Etrachsee parking lot".

Be sure to pack swimming gear to cool off in the Etrachsee.
