More summer activities in the Murau region

    For eventful and varied holidays

The Murau region offers summer guests of all ages a varied range of leisure activities. Alongside classic pursuits such as hiking, cycling and mountain biking, visitors can also enjoy sports like golf and horse riding. Those looking for even more adventure will find plenty of special experiences too, including rafting, paragliding and 3D archery.

    Fishing

It’s not just hikers and cyclists who get their money's worth in the Murau region. If you want to go fishing at the green Mur, then the Bodendorf and St. Georgen reservoirs are the places to go. On a 2.5-kilometre stretch of river, you’ll have a good chance that brown and rainbow trout will bite. Fishing maps are available at the Kreischberg information office.

An alternative: The Rottenmanner Teich is about three hectares in size and lies about seven kilometres from Murau. Fishing permits are available directly at the pond.

General regulations for fishing in the Murau region:

    • All fishing methods according to the Styrian Fisheries Act are permitted.
    • No live bait, multiple bait or insert bait may be used.
    • Barbs must be pressed on and there must be no lead under the bait.

The formula for a relaxing golf holiday? One or more picturesquely situated golf courses and a hotel or guesthouse that suits your needs and wishes. That's exactly what the Murau region has in store for you.

Whether it's at Murau-Kreischberg Golf Club or at the Mariahof golf course: Every time you tee off, you’ll enjoy a unique natural backdrop and magnificent views. If that’s enough, there are also several golf courses in the Murtal valley and the neighbouring Lungau region.

    Styria GOLF CARD

For even more flexibility during your golf holiday, the Styria GOLF CARD is a great option. It is available with 3, 4 or 5 green fees and can be used at 21 participating golf courses throughout Styria, including in the Murau region. This makes it easy to include Golf Club Murau-Kreischberg, Golf Club Grebenzen and other nearby courses in your holiday plans.

    Rafting: a refreshing adventure

Since the mid-1980s, rafting has become an increasingly popular leisure activity in Central Europe. Rafters travel down a river in an inflatable boat, and there is room for two to twelve people in the rafts. Thanks to the now highly developed safety measures, rafting is a refreshing, action-packed and safe experience.

If you have never tried rafting before, you should definitely give the sport a try while on holiday in the Murau region. Supervisors and state-certified rafting guides are on hand to assist you in safely enjoying this water sport.

Good to know: All equipment can be rented at Murtalerhof in Stadl an der Mur. All you need to bring is swimwear and a towel. From June to September, exciting tours take place daily from 9:30 to 13:30.

Paragliding high above the Murau region

Thanks to the flight schools Aufwind and Petair, you can fly high in the Murau region. Tandem paragliding gives you the rare opportunity to see the world from a bird's eye view – without any engine or distracting noises.

The beauty of it: Anyone can fly! With an experienced pilot by your side, you don't need any training or special skills – just a bit of courage.

Aim, shoot and score: 3D archery

Exhale, draw the bow and focus one last time before releasing the arrow: Archery is a fascinating sport. In the Murau region, there are three 3D archery parks where excursionists can familiarise themselves with the leisure activity or perfect their skills. At the course, you’ll encounter lifelike 3D animals.

The region’s traditional sport: water shoot

At romantic Schattensee lake – an enchanting moorland lake situated at 1,317 metres above sea level – visitors can put their aiming skills to the test during the traditional water shoot. The activity is possible from June to October and in groups of 25 or more.
