Route to the Stolzalpe summit (1,817m)
Open
This particularly rewarding hike runs from the district town of Murau up to the summit of the Stolzalpe.
The Stolzalpe lies north of Murau and is one of the most climactically favoured regions in Styria. A municipality by the same name sits on the sunny south-facing slopes, home to the well-known general and orthopaedic state hospital Murtal Standort Stolzalpe. If you have time, visit the Gesundheitswerkstätte (Health Factory) at the state hospital - Haus II, which has a beautifully designed flight of steps leading up to it. A guided tour (every Wednesday at 3.30pm) reveals plenty of interesting facts from the past and present of medicine. Then it's on up to the summit through forestland. Stop for a break at the wooden summit chapel with sandstone cross before reaching the summit cross. This is where you will find the summit register, where you can record your mountain victory for posterity.
More information
From the starting point at WM-Halle Murau (a world championship venue), we walk approx. 100m west to the pedestrian lights, where we cross the state road. Past the entrance road to Billa supermarket, we turn right. After approx. 50m, we follow the 938 signposts uphill towards Stolzalpe. In the section from 1,060m up to the church (1,204m), we have to walk along the road a couple of times until we come to the beautifully designed steps to the state hospital/Haus II (1,296m). The trail then takes a gravel road to the Fernerhütte (not serviced, 1,445m). In this area, the marked hiking trail is also designated as the Steirischer Landesrundwanderweg (Styrian State Circular Hiking Trail) and long-distance hiking trail 909. From the Fernerhütte, we alternate between footpath and logging road several times. The final short, steep section takes us to the 1,810m high Franz-Kerda Hütte with chapel and summit register. However, we still haven't reached the actual summit: two small ascents come first, taking approx. 5 minutes (1,817m). Return via the route you ascended.
The summit register is not located at the summit cross, but in the chapel about five minutes' walk below the peak.
