Exhibition tour in the Murau Handicraft Museum

In 2023, the trade section of the Murau Crafts Museum was redesigned. The topics of trade routes; measuring, weighing, paying; markets; long-distance and colonial goods trade and retail were reworked. To this end, Thomas Felfer and Uli Vonbank-Schedler have researched various archives and reopened a number of company histories. During this exhibition tour, the exhibition organizers will provide insights into the exhibition and present interesting details from their research.

From the demand clock to the demand alarm clock - the history of trade in Murau
Until the industrial revolution in the 18th century, trade was the main source of private wealth in Europe. Trade was closely related to the development of the towns. Already in the 13th century Murau received privileges, which also led to an upswing in trade. Murau was an important trading center for the surrounding regions and an important hub for the traffic of goods.
The newly designed section of the Murau Craft Museum provides insights into the trading history of the region. The exhibition shows how trade routes changed over the centuries, how goods were measured, weighed, paid for and transported. It also focuses on the variety of goods traded and provides insight into the development of retail trade through descriptions of resident trading houses.
