In Hochsteiermark, love of nature meets delicious food. Whether it’s at a restaurant, a traditional inn, a mountain hut or a fine-dining place: The region’s cuisine is fresh and seasonal, down-to-earth or sophisticated – and, of course, centred around regional products. If it’s true that the way to a man’s or woman’s heart is through their stomach, Hochsteiermark is the perfect place to fall in love!
Or should we rather say: Have it packed by the pros! Numerous places across Hochsteiermark, for instance many of the region’s delis, offer this great service. With a basket full of local delicacies, it’s even more pleasurable to explore the nature of the Hochschwab region. Alternatively, the region’s stunning lakes or the flowering trees of the Streuobst region are also perfect settings for an enjoyable picnic.
Hochsteiermark boasts six restaurants that have been awarded a total of 16 Gault Millau toques and 16 Falstaff forks – and that’s quite something! Considering the region’s small size, six award-winning restaurants in one place are an impressive achievement, making Hochsteiermark an even more attractive choice for business travellers.
As good things take time, many restaurants in Hochsteiermark follow the “slow food” approach of cooking. The result: exquisite delicacies such as “deer heart with grated goose liver” or “pickled Pretul char with nasturtium”. On top, you get to enjoy top-class service and heartfelt hospitality.
Hochsteiermark boasts several culinary initiatives. Their regional “quality seals” involve traditional inns as well as fine-dining restaurants.
The most important preconditions for this quality seal are lovingly prepared dishes and fresh, regional and seasonal ingredients. This is true for all certified Kulinarium Steiermark partners in Hochsteiermark.
In the “Genussregion Hochschwabwild”, you can find 14 “Wilde Wirte” restaurants. But don’t worry, the “wild” part only refers to the exquisite venison dishes served there! For instance, don’t miss the chance to try delicious deer ragout or roe deer served with a glass of strong Maiwipferl beer.
Traditional inns and restaurants have always been places of social gathering, where people meet to have a chat and a laugh and enjoy down-to-earth, regional dishes. The “Steirische Dorfwirte” initiative makes sure that this tradition is kept alive. Hochsteiermark features several “Steirische Dorfwirte” restaurants, where you can experience true village life in a cosy atmosphere.
You can also enjoy delicious local dishes at the region’s many mountain huts. If you would like to combine a stunning hike with some good food, we recommend the region’s culinary mountain hut tours.
Gourmet tip: Be sure to visit the organically certified Karl Ludwig Haus. Located at 1,804 metres above sea level on the high plateau of the Rax, the mountain hut serves vegetarian and vegan treats as well as traditional classics.
