Getting to Hochsteiermark

Getting to Hochsteiermark is easy from all directions – no matter what mode of transport you use, and whether you come from Linz in the north, from Salzburg in the west, from Vienna in the east or from Graz in the south. Plus, travelling around the region is just as easy.

Hochsteiermark can be conveniently reached from Austria’s neighbouring countries, including Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. If you fly into Graz or Vienna, you can use the local taxi services or train connections to get from the airport to your final destination. Thanks to the region’s excellent connection to the regional motorway and dual carriageway network, it’s also easy to get to Hochsteiermark by car.

Travelling by car

  • From Linz, take motorway A7 or A1 to reach the A9. At St. Michael, continue along Semmering Schnellstraße S6, with Hochsteiermark to the left.
  • Hochsteiermark can conveniently be reached from the east, with Budapest and Bratislava only a stone’s throw from Vienna. From there, follow Südosttangente A23 from an easterly direction towards Semmering Schnellstraße S6 until you reach the respective exit.
  • From Graz, follow the A9 from a southerly direction and continue along the Semmering Schnellstraße at St. Michael. From there, follow the S6.
  • From Salzburg, take the A1 and A9 and continue as if coming from Linz.

Travelling by train

Getting to Hochsteiermark by train is easy and comfortable. The region boasts numerous stations and an extensive rail network making train travels in the region highly convenient.

The region’s main stations are Mürzzuschlag, Kapfenberg and Bruck an der Mur, all of which are serviced by Railjet, EuroCity and express trains. In addition, there are InterCity, Nightjet and Euronight trains running to Bruck.

Travelling around Hochsteiermark by train

Travelling around the region by public transport is no problem at all, with the Styrian Semmering, the Waldheimat, Streuobst and Mariazellerland regions as well as Bruck an der Mur and Kapfenberg all easy to reach by train. To visit Mürzer Oberland Nature Park and the Hochschwab region, we recommend using the local busses.

Travelling by plane

The following three airports are convenient for travelling to Hochsteiermark:

  • Vienna International Airport in the east: From there, it’s less than two hours by InterCity train to Bruck an der Mur.
  • From Graz Airport, it only takes 10 minutes to get to the main station by suburban train. From there, it takes about half an hour to get to Bruck an der Mur by Railjet train.
  • From Salzburg Airport, there’s a direct bus to the main station (about 45 minutes). From there, the train ride to Bruck an der Mur takes about 3.5 hours.

Alternatively, all three airports have car rental facilities.
