Climbing routes for every skill level

Climbing and bouldering in ERZBERG LEOBEN

Active nature lovers can get the ultimate adrenaline kick by climbing on rugged rock faces. In the Eisenerz Alps, they’ll find a true via ferrata eldorado where both beginners and experienced mountain enthusiasts are rewarded with unique views of a beautiful natural landscape.

“Challenging ascents followed by beautiful views”: This pretty much sums up the via ferratas in the region around Erzberg and Leoben. And the "challenging" ones really do live up to their name: They are among the most enticing and, at the same time, most difficult climbing routes that Austria has to offer.

Climbing safety

From the right equipment to the right technique: There are a lot of things to consider when going climbing. For your own safety, please keep the following tips in mind:

  1. Plan your climbing tour in detail and consider the level of difficulty and length of the route, the ascent and descent, as well as the prevailing weather conditions.
  2. Set realistic goals that take your own abilities into account.
  3. Basic equipment includes a climbing harness, via ferrata set, helmet, and first aid kit. Don't forget to save the European emergency number 112 in your phone!
  4. Keep an eye on the weather and don't go on a tour if there is a potential risk of thunderstorms.
  5. Closed via ferratas should be avoided at all costs. On via ferratas, wire cables and anchors should be carefully checked for safety.
  6. Do a partner check with your climbing partner: harness, tie-in knot, helmet, rope, belay device ...
  7. Observe and maintain the required distance between climbers. No more than one person should be on any segment between two rock attachment points.
  8. Always announce in advance when you’re planning to overtake someone and only do so if the manoeuvre does not pose any danger for either one of you.
  9. Avoid triggering rockfall by being careful when climbing.
  10. Treat nature and the environment with respect, don’t litter, and avoid making noise.

Tip from the region: If you would like to dabble in climbing, you can do so in the company of experienced mountain guides! We recommend you contact Eisenerz-ALPIN Alpine School.
