Short circular trail at the bottom of the Tremmelberg - forest education trail to the forest school - in the heart of the Murtal hiking region (www.murtal.at)

The forest nature trail was opened back in 1993 and has been repeatedly renewed in the years since. The most important elements are still in place. Along the ascent, you pass information boards about black alder, mountain elm, spruce and Swiss stone pine before reaching the Schlittenhütte (sledge hut) in a small clearing. This hut is home to a forest museum, where old wooden sledges, tools and drawings are on display, as well as the forest school, which is illustrated with information boards. The forest museum and the forest school are freely accessible. A "Steirerherz wooden bench" also invites you to linger. The entire circular trail leads through the forest, with beautiful views from time to time. At the time of recording (April 2021), some of the information board posts are in poor condition, so please take care.

From St. Michael in Upper Styria via the Murtal expressway S36 (toll sticker required) to the "Knittelfeld-West" exit; continue via Sachendorf (towards Gaal) to the clearly visible parking lot at the end of the village (27 km, approx. 20 minutes).

From Judenburg via the Murtal expressway S36 (toll sticker required) to the "Knittelfeld-West" exit; continue as above. (19 km, approx. 20 minutes).

At the Sachendorf parking lot (1), 697 m, we follow the asphalt road, past the meadows and fields, slightly uphill. After a few minutes we reach a few houses and come to the junction (2), 715 m, of the hiking trails "Temmelberg via Wolfsgrube" and "Tremmelberg via Vorder-Tremmel". We keep right or straight ahead and follow the signs "Waldlehrpfad zur Waldschule". A short stretch along the forest road and we see a turn-off to the left. There is a steeper section of the path. We follow the path, cross a small wooden bridge and reach a forest road and a crossroads. Now turn right and walk a short distance along a flat path until you reach the wooden building (sledge hut), which houses the forest museum (3), 808 m, and the forest school. After a leisurely break, we continue slightly downhill along a forest road. In a bend to the right, the path branches off to the left, which we now follow. The path joins a forest road, which we follow to the right, parallel to the edge of the forest. We walk mostly flat and a little uphill to the next crossroads, where we keep left and continue steadily downhill until we reach our starting point again.

There is also a very nice picnic spot at the forest school.

The starting point in Sachendorf is easy to reach by bus (bus stop "Sachendorf Abzw Maßweg", from there a 15-minute walk). The nearest train station is in Knittelfeld.
