Hiking from one mountain hut to the next, through almost untouched countryside: on the Gesäuse Hüttenrunde, you’ll get to know the Ennstal Alps from every possible angle. On this multi-day hike through stunning scenery, you’ve got complete flexibility – there are numerous route options and no fixed overnight stops.
Depending on your mood, the Gesäuse Hütten can be tackled in a wide variety of ways. If you’d like to skip a stage, you can simply take a bus or taxi to the next one. In total, there are around 6,000 metres of elevation gain to tackle, both ascending and descending.
Whichever route you choose, each of the seven Gesäuse huts offers regional delicacies and phenomenal views!
Who is the hut tour suitable for?
Technical difficulty: moderate – Fitness level: higher
This hut-to-hut walk requires experience of alpine hiking. From a technical point of view, the daily stages – which take between 3 hours 45 minutes and 7 hours 30 minutes – follow moderately difficult mountain trails marked with red dots.
An overview of the stages
Nothing is set in stone: you can tailor your own personal hut-to-hut route to suit your schedule and fitness level!
You can start in Admont, Johnsbach or Gstatterboden. If you’d like to skip a stage, you can simply take a bus or taxi to the next one.
Places well worth a visit
Anyone exploring the Gesäuse will soon realise that the nearest mountain hut is never far away – and sometimes a little detour is particularly worthwhile. Off the beaten track of the official mountain hut circuit, there are other huts where you can feast on vegan delights to your heart’s content. Whether as a day’s destination or for a delightful detour along the way – these stops are always well worth it:
- the Klinkehütte, situated at 1,486 m
- the rustic Grabneralm
- the idyllically situated Ardning Alm
- and the cosy Rottenmanner Hütte
So: keep your eyes peeled and take the turn-off
