Admont Abbey

Many come to the Gesäuse for the scenery. But one of the declared protagonists of the region is culture, with the Benedictine Admont Abbey and the largest abbey library in the world. The grace with its two striking towers can be seen from far and near. Those interested in art history can taste their way from Romanesque to Baroque, for friends of contemporary art the Museum of Contemporary Art provides accents and the Museum of Natural History leaves nothing to be desired.

The marble floor of the library alone puzzles one as the only optical illusion. But there is much more to discover and marvel at in the Abbey Library. (Secret passages, for example!) The main characters are, of course, the 70,000 antiquarian books, some of whose spines have even been painted white for the sake of brightness. Their stories are mostly about theological literature or profane sciences, but many editions of the Bible are also among them. In addition, the manuscript collection provides aha effects.

The eighth WONDER OF THE WORLD

The largest monastic library hall in the world is also considered the eighth wonder of the world. If you are in Admont, you should not miss this true highlight of baroque architecture. With 70,000 books, ceiling frescoes by Bartolomeo Altomonte and the famous wooden sculptures "The Four Last Things" by Josef Stammel, you can't help but be amazed. Majestically decorated in gold and white, the library is truly unique.

In 1997 Admont Monastery began to build up its collection of contemporary art.

Art history museum

The Museum of Art History contains important exhibits from Romanesque to Rococo, paintings, sculptures, textiles and many other objects from the paraments.

Natural history museum

The Natural History Museum was rebuilt after the devastating monastery fire in 1865 by the only 20-year-old Admont Benedictine Father Gabriel Strobl between 1866 and 1906.
