Sporty summer activities in ERZBERG LEOBEN

Rugged peaks, lush alpine pastures, and magnificent lakes: The region around Erzberg is a paradise for active nature lovers – full of hiking and climbing routes, cycle paths, lakes and golf courses.

Activities in the mountains

Leisurely or challenging – exploring the ERZBERG LEOBEN region on foot is possible on a variety of trails, suitable for every skill level:

  • BergZeitReise is a long-distance hiking trail with 18 daily stages, where nature, culture and culinary delights meet.
  • Eisenerzer Reichenstein at 2,156 metres above sea level is one of the most famous mountains in the region.
  • Families with children can take a leisurely hike up Wilder Berg in Mautern. At the top, the animals of the wildlife park are waiting for them.

Climbing in the region is a bit more thrill-inducing. The tours in the Eisenerz Alps are among the most enticing, yet most difficult climbing routes in Austria. Those who want to try their hand at the region’s via ferratas might want to start on Häuselberg in Leoben.

Safety first: Numerous mountain guides – for instance, those of Alpfox Mountain and Ski School – offer guided hikes and climbing tours. The advantage: Thanks to their many years of experience, they know exactly which routes are among the most beautiful in the region.

Cycling around Erzberg

ERZBERG LEOBEN is a true eldorado for cyclists. The leisurely GenussRadtour into the Liesingtal valley leads cyclists through the picturesque villages of the region and past inns and production sites of local specialities. 

And on challenging trails, passionate mountain bikers can climb the mountain peaks of the region. In addition, two stages of the popular Mur cycle path along the river Mur lead through ERZBERG LEOBEN. An important connection between the Mur and Enns cycle paths is the Rastlandradweg R15. The route leads from Selzthal to the cycling hub of St. Michael in Upper Styria. And if you want to extend your cycling tour, you can simply continue to Graz.

A sporty combination: A Bike&Hike tour lets you combine cycling with hiking. There are several routes to choose from around Erzberg. For instance, you can cycle all the way to the starting point of your hike on Reichenstein. Nature will thank you for leaving your car parked at your accommodation.

Activities on and in the water

In summer, the lakes and public pools around Erzberg are popular destinations for a dip in the water. A jump into Lake Leopoldsteinersee is particularly refreshing due to its cool water temperatures. If this adventure seems a bit too cold for you, you can also marvel at the lake’s beauty on a hike along the lakeshore. With water temperatures of around 25 °C, the outdoor pools await their guests with pure bathing pleasure and a magnificent mountain backdrop. Around the pools, kids will be delighted to find plenty of open space and playgrounds to romp around.

River hiking is another fun and refreshing activity along the banks of the river Mur. You can choose between going on a boat trip or stand-up paddling.

Playing golf in Trofaiach

Amid beautiful nature, golfers can pursue their passion for golfing at Trofaiach Golf Club. The golf course is located on a sunny high plateau surrounded by untouched nature and offers a magnificent view of the mountain scenery of the Eisenerz Alps.

What’s more, you can easily improve your handicap on the 18-hole course. Guests without golfing experience get tips from instructors at the driving range. And as the sun slowly sets, we recommend you try the regional delicacies served on the sundeck of the club's own restaurant.
