Main Square & Graz Town Hall

Stage of the city’s history

The main square has formed the centre of Graz since the 12th century. Surrounded by townhouses from different periods, the town hall rises as a defining architectural presence. Trams cross the square, market stalls add subtle accents, and cafés open out towards the city. Here, architecture, history, and the present moment converge within a compact space. The main square is not a monument, but a living urban setting.

Laid out around 1160, the square quickly developed into the city’s economic centre. The present town hall was built between 1887 and 1893 in the Neo-Baroque style. At its centre stands the Archduke Johann Fountain from 1878. The figures at its base symbolise the Styrian rivers Mur, Enns, Drau, and Sann.

Everyday life on the main square

Urban space in motion

The square shifts throughout the day. In the morning, it becomes a market; by midday, it fills with urban activity; in the evening, façades settle into a quieter presence under soft light. The Luegg House stands out with its stucco façade and arcaded walkway. From here, paths lead into Herrengasse, Sporgasse, or towards the Schlossberg—short distances that reveal Graz as a city shaped by movement and connection.

Time and again, the main square becomes a stage: for the Christmas market during Advent, New Year’s celebrations, or international street art. Political gatherings, city festivals, and public events also find their place here.
