Cycle to the Lipizzaners – get up close to the noble white horses in their home and experience them like never before!

Starting from the Lipizzaner stud farm in Piber, this cycling route leads to the outer farms Kampl, Wilhelm, and Reinthaler, where young fillies and colts are prepared for their summer stay on the Glein and Stubalm. From September to June, there are great chances to spot the young horses on the pastures of the outer farms and observe them up close. Information boards offer fascinating insights into the daily life of these noble animals.

This short but hilly route takes you through a well-maintained cultural landscape, offering beautiful panoramic views of the Lipizzaner homeland. Two challenging climbs make the route particularly appealing for non-electric bikers.

Along the way, cozy inns and wine taverns provide a chance to rest, and in summer, the Schlossbad in Bärnbach offers a refreshing break.

Route:
Lipizzaner Stud Farm Piber – Turn-off to Kampl Outer Farm – Schachnerweg – Wilhelm Outer Farm – Piberer Au – Piberegg – Karl-Ortner-Siedlung – Reinthaler Outer Farm – Hemmerberg – Kohlschwarz – along the Kainach – Schlossbad Bärnbach – Knobelberg – Lipizzaner Stud Farm Piber

The Kampl Foal Barn, not far from the main stud farm, houses the older foals.

At the Wilhelm Farm (Schachnerweg), the one- to three-year-old Lipizzaner colts are housed from mid-September to mid-June. Their summer stay is spent on the Stubalm near the Soldatenhaus, close to the Old Almhaus.

At the Reinthaler Farm in Kohlschwarz, the one- to three-year-old Lipizzaner fillies are kept from mid-September to mid-June. Their summer stay is spent on the Gleinalm in the Brendl-Stadl.

Basic Equipment:
Cycling helmet, drink, weather-appropriate sports clothing, rain and sun protection, warm clothing for transitional seasons.

Bicycle:
Roadworthy trekking bike or E-bike with required equipment. Suitable gearing for uphill rides (700 m elevation) and good brakes for downhill sections.

The route includes some steep passages as well as short sections on forest and gravel paths. We recommend this tour for E-bikers and sporty cyclists. The tour is signposted in one direction only (clockwise).

Train connection: S7 Graz – Köflach, Köflach train station; 1.7 km to the tour start, Therme NOVA and the turnoff to Schachnerweg. Bicycles can be taken on the train free of charge.

Travel notice:
Due to electrification works, the Graz–Köflach railway line will be temporarily closed in 2026 and 2027. Replacement services will operate without bicycle transport.
