Tickets: € 49.90 per person
Premiere on November 4th at Schloss Piber.
A wedding, a missing father, a ruthless gang leader, and a consequential revelation: Johann Nestroy's “The Wedding Day” combines sharp wit with a turbulent story full of deceptions, intrigues, and human weaknesses. The cultural association Theater absolut brings the 1832 parody in its own adaptation as a winter production in 2026 to Schloss Piber.
At the center are Camilla, the daughter of the wealthy macaroni manufacturer Guckano, and her fiancé Paphuzi, who, despite his financial troubles, insists on a frugal wedding preparation. Camilla, on the other hand, is generous and not only supports her servants but has already paid off a significant part of her fiancé's debts. She holds a particular affection for the maid Ritti, whose life story reveals a connection to the past of Paphuzi's family.
As the wedding approaches, the celebration is completely thrown into chaos by the disappearance of Camilla's father Guckano. A gang of day thieves has captured him and is demanding ransom. Their leader Zampa eventually sees a way to save his own situation: under the protection of the honorable house, he wants to hide his true identity and force Camilla into marriage to secure her father’s release.
Nestroy portrays his characters with sharp observation and exposes their vanity, cowardice, and ruthlessness without losing sight of the comedic tone. It is precisely from the contrast between moral weaknesses, self-serving interests, and human compassion that the biting humor of the play emerges. Notably, the strong position of the female characters, who repeatedly set boundaries for the male characters, stands out.
The production at Schloss Piber turns Nestroy's parody, premiered in 1832, into an evening of theater between classic Austrian comedy, intrigue, and social satire.
The performance combines classic theater culture with a charming castle ambiance.
