Field Trip - Do Alpine Pastures Need a Biotope Network?

Content: Alpine pastures are one of the essential elements of the Austrian cultural landscape and serve many functions. For us humans, they provide grazing for livestock or a place for relaxation during a hike. The species-rich meadows in exposed locations are also a great gain for biodiversity. However, climate change and a rising tree line increasingly threaten these areas. The management of the surrounding forests and the rise of the tree line will be discussed with the head of forestry and hunting at Stift Admont, DI Karl Jäger, and the former veterinary officer of Murau, Univ. Doz. Dr. Armin Deutz:

Goal: The participants of the excursion should gain a wildlife ecological insight into the biodiversity at Sonntagskogel and understand the connections between the habitat network and our alpine core habitats. Stift Admont also demonstrates its efforts to allow space for biodiversity in a commercial forest. The importance of alpine forests and pastures and the close connection with the traditional management of the Austrian cultural landscape should be conveyed.
