One of the most popular, easy and very frequently used ski tours in the Murtal adventure region. Due to the wooded area and the possibility to use relatively flat terrain areas, the Rosenkogel is well doable even in bad weather or poor snow conditions. Great view mountain. Note the winter closure of Sommerthörl!

With 670 Hm a, also for beginners feasible ski tour in the adventure region Murtal. The terrain is quite easy and offers many possibilities. Beginners can ski the technically simple forest trail, for more experienced tourers there are several options to get to the desired downhill enjoyment. The tour on the Rosenkogel is also very good and easy to extend, Schneegrube or Schöntal would be good options. Both require a short counter ascent.

From Vienna (approx. 2.5 hours):

Take the A2 towards Graz.
At 161-St. Michael junction, switch to the S36 towards Judenburg/Knittelfeld.
Exit at Knittelfeld-West.
Drive through Knittelfeld and continue to Gaal.
Follow the road into the Ingering Valley.
After the Ingeringsee Inn, continue along the road to the signposted Winter parking area Sommertörl (parking at the end of the road).

From Graz (approx. 1.5 hours):

Take the A9 towards Linz/Salzburg.
At 161-St. Michael junction, change to the S36 towards Judenburg/Knittelfeld.
Exit at Knittelfeld-West.
Drive through Knittelfeld and continue to Gaal.
Follow the road into the Ingering Valley.
Pass the Ingeringsee Inn and continue to the Winter parking area Sommertörl.

From Salzburg (approx. 3 hours):

Take the A10 towards Villach.
At exit 63-Altenmarkt, change to the B320 towards Radstadt/Schladming.
Continue via Schladming to Liezen.
Join the A9 towards Graz.
At 161-St. Michael junction, switch to the S36 towards Judenburg/Knittelfeld.
Exit at Knittelfeld-West.
Drive through Knittelfeld and continue to Gaal.
Follow the road into the Ingering Valley.
Continue to the signposted Winter parking area Sommertörl.

Ascent: Follow the road towards Sommertörl as far as the first bend. Continue on the left side of the stream via an old Karenweg. Pass the Sommerhütte on the Sommertörl. Cross the open area in a northerly direction and over the wooded ridge to the Rosenkogel.

Descents: Via the eastern slope towards the Loretotto chapel and via the path back to the Sommertörl, then continue as for the ascents

Extension option to Schneegrube 1950m: Follow the ridge from the Rosenkogel in a NW direction to the first summit after the Schneegrube. Descend on the SE side to the forest path and ascend again to the Loretto Chapel.

Extension option to Schöntal 1620m: From Sommertörl, continue down the forest road and ascend the 2nd forest road towards Schöntalhöhe. Descent across meadows past the Schöntalhütte just before the parking lot.

Equipment for Ski Touring

Touring skis with skins, bindings, and compatible ski touring boots
Crampons (ski crampons) for icy sections
Adjustable ski poles with winter baskets
Backpack with ski attachment system
Layering system: functional underwear, mid-layer, insulating jacket, wind- & waterproof shell
Touring pants, gaiters if needed
Helmet (recommended for descents and rocky terrain)
Gloves (spare pair recommended), hat, headband, buff
Ski goggles, sunglasses, and sun protection
Water bottle or thermos, high-energy snacks
First aid kit, bivy sack, personal medication
Headlamp, mobile phone with emergency numbers, map or GPS

Essential safety gear in alpine terrain:
For ski touring, an avalanche transceiver, probe, and shovel are mandatory. Equally important are proper training in their use and up-to-date information on weather and avalanche conditions.
