This hike in the Murtal region on the Schattseit'n side of St. Georgen leads mainly through wooded areas to the Schafkogel summit plateau with a view and summit cross.
From St. Georgen ob Judenburg you can get to know two main hiking regions. On the one hand, there is the Sonnseit'n, which lies down the Mur on the left side of the valley, belongs to the Murberge and is a popular hike with the Habring at 1497m. The Schattseit'n lies on the southern side of the valley and is part of the northern foothills of the Seetal Alps. There are two peaks to hike here, the Schafkogel at 1746 m and the Weißeck at 1743 m. Most of the way up the Schafkogel is on a gravel road, making orientation easy. The summit area impresses with a beautiful summit cross and a view of the core area of the Seetal Alps and the surrounding mountain regions. After the hike, you can stop off at one of the local inns and/or enjoy a delicious treat from the "Murtal Eis" ice cream factory.

More information

From Judenburg via the B317 (14 km, approx. 15 minutes)

From Murau via the B96 and B317 (32 km, approx. 25 minutes)

Several parking possibilities in the village or directly at the train station St. Georgen ob Judenburg.
From the village square in St. Georgen ob Judenburg (1), 734 m, we walk to the traffic circle and take the third exit. Here we hike uphill through the village, first along an asphalt road, which then continues as a gravel road. In the Georgner Graben, the road, which is also the hiking trail, leads continuously uphill. After approx. 2.4 km we come to a road junction (2), 1032 m, where there are also yellow signposts. We keep left and stay on the gravel road for the next 8.2 km. There are generally yellow signposts at the crossroads, but if not, we always stay on the clearly recognizable main path. At an altitude of approx. 1570 m, we leave the forest road and see the start (3) of the narrow path that continues along the ridge. We soon reach the forest road again, which we follow uphill for a short distance before the path continues to the right. From now on we are in the "summit straight", so to speak, and hike across a clearing to the summit area of the Schafkogel (4), 1746 m, with the summit cross newly erected in 2021. The way back is via the ascent route.

A few tips for correct and fair behavior in the forest: (Source: www.bundesforste.at  - 6/2021)

  • Hikers should avoid visits to the forest about 1.5 hours before sunrise and after sunset, as wildlife is especially active during this time.
  • Plastic bottles, handkerchiefs, cigarette butts & Co have no place in the forest! Please make sure that you do not leave any trash in the forest.
  • Camping and making fire - is strictly forbidden in the forest!
  • In principle, each person is allowed to collect 2 kg of mushrooms and berries per day for personal use in the forest. It is only forbidden if the forest owner expressly forbids it.
