Stadtpfarrkirche St. Nikolaus

In the heart of the Murtal, the parish church of Judenburg rises, dedicated to Saint Nicholas. Behind the magnificent high altar are three impressive stained glass windows, each depicting an image of the church's patron: Nicholas as the protector of travelers and sailors, as the intercessor for children, and as the patron of girls and women.

The church building is rooted in the early Baroque period when it was constructed in the style of a wall pillar church. Around 1420, the house of worship received a rich decor with late Baroque carvings. After a devastating fire in 1504, a reconstruction took place, which also incorporated late Gothic elements.

The most precious work of art in the church is the world-famous "Madonna of Judenburg." This sublime figure was created by Master Hans around 1420. It is now kept in a small side chapel located to the left of the high altar.

A special feature of the parish church is that it does not have a directly attached bell tower. Instead, the free-standing star tower serves as the bell and church tower. It not only shapes the cityscape but is also considered a landmark of Judenburg and a symbol of the parish.
