St. Georgen ob Judenburg

The outer appearance of the church building, which is oriented to the east, is very essentially characterized by the mighty, four-story Romanesque tower with a Baroque dome, bulb and lantern.

The parish office is currently not occupied. For personal concerns, please contact the parish office Judenburg wenden St. Nikolaus, Kirchengasse 3, 8750 Judenburg. Tel. no. +43 3572 82235

The building, which was laid out in the first half of the 13th century as a rectangular hall church with an eastern tower, was enlarged in the 15th century to the east by the addition of a chancel and sacristy; this Gothic addition is easily recognizable from the high-rising structure, the narrow lancet windows and the buttresses at the chancel end.

In the mid-17th century, further structural changes were made by vaulting the originally flat-roofed nave and erecting a transept in the form of Baroque chapels with semicircular ends. Stylistically, the Romanesque foundation building belongs to the type of the "choir tower church" with an indented square choir room in the east tower - a type of construction which is represented in Styria with several examples from the 12th and 13th centuries.

A special feature are the Romanesque wall paintings in the tower square of the church, which were uncovered and restored in the course of the interior renovation from 1987 to 1989. It is one of the few complete decorations of a room from the 13th century. The paintings are a highly interesting stylistic document between late Romanesque and the Zacken style. They include the representation of the church (Ecclesia), the evangelists, the apostles and the prophets, the heavenly Jerusalem and 20 scenes from the legend of St. George. The legibility of all the inscriptions in the vault is also remarkable.

A few years ago, the Institute of Microbiology and Genetics at the University of Vienna took samples from the wall paintings and subsequently examined them. This led to the discovery of a previously unknown species of bacteria. This new genus was named after the place of discovery - St. Georgen ob Judenburg - and has found its way into scientific publications as "Georgenia muralis".
