Mountain tour on the big Tragl

Closed
This unique karst tour at the foot of the legendary Sturzhahn, which was first climbed by mountaineering icon Heinrich Harrer, is considered an alpine treat.
The unique mountain scenery of the Tote Gebirge awaits you on this tour: limestone rock slabs, cirques, fossils, alpine flowers peeking out from between the rocks and many sinkholes, the karst funnels so typical of this area. Also almost always in view: the legendary Sturzhahn, whose 200-meter-high west face was first climbed by Heinrich Harrer.

The ascent to the Tragl is demanding and only for experienced mountain hikers.

More information

The journey to Tauplitz is best planned with google.at/maps. From here you can take the 4-seater chairlift to the high plateau.

By car, you can get to the Tauplitzalm from Bad Mitterndorf via the Tauplitzalm Alpine Road (toll).

Start from the mountain station of the 4-seater chairlift or at the parking lot on the Tauplitzalm - with six lakes the largest lake plateau in Central Europe.

Via a meadow path you hike east to the Steirersee lake. In early summer, the surrounding meadows are transformed into a sea of alpine flowers, where purple alpine rue, velvety blue gentian, hellebores and rock carnations bloom by the millions.

Shortly before the Steirersee, we recommend a detour to the Steirerseebankerl, a popular vantage point. From here you already have a beautiful view of the legendary Sturzhahn and the Steirersee.

Now you follow the alpine road above the Steirersee along the refreshment huts to the Salzsteig and across the alpine floor you continue to the fork of trails 218 and 276. Here you change to trail 276 and hike through many mountain pines to the Jungbauer cross. The characteristic shape of the Sturzhahn is always in view. Then continue in a northerly direction to Schwaigbrunn, where the trail turns in the direction of Traglhals and leads to the 2,179 m high summit of the Großer Tragl.

At the Jungbauer cross is a large sinkhole into which Herbert Jungbauer fell in 1948 and could not be recovered.

For your own safety, you should definitely keep to the pole markings at this point and also otherwise stay on the signposted path. In addition, this tour should only be done in good weather conditions. In rainy conditions it becomes dangerous and slippery terrain is no fun anyway.

Enjoy the high and the panoramic views of the mountain peaks all around!

From Tauplitz train station to the valley station of the 4-seater chairlift is about a 20-minute walk. The bus stop is located directly at the valley station.
