Upper Voitsberg Castle Ruins

High above Voitsberg, the walls of the Obervoitsberg castle ruins tell a story that dates back to the 12th century. The castle was built in 1164 at the request of the Styrian landowner Ottokar IV. and developed over the centuries into an important seat of power. After a lightning strike in 1798, the already dilapidated structure was abandoned. At the end of the 19th century, the ruins were restored and handed over to the municipality of Voitsberg in 1910.

Today, this historic site provides an impressive stage for culture: the historical castle walls offer a charming backdrop for open-air events. Since 1960, the Burghofspiele Voitsberg have also taken place here.

Around the castle ruins, a discovery tour is also worthwhile. The Schlossbergsteig leads past the West Styrian Sagenberg. Along the way, 24 artistically designed steles tell tales from the region. The Sagenbergschrat brings a playful element to the experience. The Erzherzog Johann enjoyment, sensory, and snacking garden, the archery course, and the energy adventure park make the Schlossberg a diverse excursion destination in the Lipizzaner homeland.
