The village chapel of Tregist, also known as the Chapel of Mary, Undoer of Knots, is located in the municipality of Bärnbach and belongs to the parish of Voitsberg. The first chapel was consecrated in 1884, and after its destruction by flooding in the 1950s, a new building was created between 1986 and 1989, constructed with significant involvement from the local community.
The West Styrian artist Franz Weiss designed the chapel as an impressive Gesamtkunstwerk. Both outside and inside, a colorful imagery unfolds, featuring biblical motifs, saints, and figures like Mother Teresa. Local references are always present, connecting faith with the surrounding environment. The centerpiece is the altar painting of Mary, Undoer of Knots, which symbolically represents hope and resolution and even draws connections to contemporary historical events. The chapel is particularly atmospheric during the Christmas season, when a nativity scene is created around the building. Today, the chapel is a protected monument and is regarded as a unique place of lived art and spirituality.
