Stone Age Museum at Rein Abbey
Gratwein-Straßengel
Experience 6000 years of history of the Styrian Hornstein mining impressively.
The exhibition at Stift Rein connects archaeological research with fascinating history and uniquely makes one of the oldest cultural areas of Styria experienceable. In the Stein.Zeit.Museum, the world of Neolithic flint mining comes to life, showing how a seemingly inconspicuous stone became the key to tools, innovation, and the survival of early communities.
In the midst of the historical monastery area, an exciting journey unfolds into a time thousands of years ago. Original finds from the Rein region, including the famous Reiner flint, tell the story of the first miners in Styria, their techniques, their daily lives, and their remarkable inventiveness. The carefully curated exhibition combines modern presentation with authentic artifacts, offering a rare glimpse into the beginnings of human technology.
The visit also leads to one of the most significant historical buildings in the Graz Region. Stift Rein, founded in 1129, is considered the oldest continuously existing Cistercian abbey in the world and remains a place of lived culture and spirituality to this day. Amidst baroque architecture, tranquil monastery courtyards, and centuries-old history, the exhibition creates an atmosphere that makes the past tangible.
