Stiegenkirche

Graz

Hidden Baroque gem in Graz's Sporgasse

The Stiegenkirche Graz is one of the oldest parish churches in the city and was first mentioned in a document in 1343. It lies hidden behind the building front of Sporgasse and is only accessible via a characteristic staircase – a distinctive architectural feature that gave it its name.

Between 1619 and 1627, the Augustinian Hermits built a baroque new structure over the former Paulskirche, completed with a staircase by Antonio Solari around 1636. Inside, a clear, simply designed space surprises with a colorful altarpiece by Gottfried Mairwöger. The atmosphere conveys an almost mystical tranquility – the place once served as a student church and is an oasis for reflection in the midst of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Graz's old town.

As of 2024, the building is privately owned and is closed until further notice! It is still uncertain to what extent the church will be accessible to the public in the future.
