Rossmann Fabric Shop & Bespoke Tailoring

On the large wooden sales table, Martin Rossmann has spread out his bound sample books, containing fabric samples from Loro Piana, Zegna, and Holland & Sherry: the finest merino wool from Australian sheep, gossamer linen-silk blends for summer, or silky-soft vicuña, the shy wild relative of the alpaca – the finest yarn that the Andes can provide. On an old tailor's dummy, a midnight blue velvet dressing gown awaits its next fitting.

Even as a little boy, his father Eduard's workshop was his playroom, the humming sewing machines the soundtrack of his childhood. It has been nearly a hundred years since his grandfather Karl Rossmann founded the family business. Martin officially joined in 1997, taking over in 2002 in the third generation. Today, the business stands on two pillars: the sale and shipment of high-quality fabrics, even beyond the Austrian borders, and the tailoring shop, which specializes in custom-made designs with five experienced master tailors. The repertoire ranges from suits and costumes to wedding attire, sport and leisure jackets, and blousons, as well as coats, hunting clothing, and traditional costumes.

Anyone choosing a piece from Rossmann must be patient: About four months pass from the first fitting to the finished suit. Care takes time: Between the lining and the outer fabric, there is never a glued interior, but always one that is hand-sewn. “So that you can move well in the suit.” In some cases, this is particularly important, like for the conductor who repeatedly has his suits tailored by him. "We sew in a special pleat so that the entire torso part does not ride up when he raises his arms while conducting.” For Rossmann, his work represents conscious consumption, prioritizing quality over fast fashion. How seriously he takes this is also evident away from new creations: In a corner of the workshop hangs a vintage tuxedo from the 1970s, which the master tailor is bringing back to life seam by seam.

From the first idea to the finished piece, Rossmann personally accompanies his customers – with the time that bespoke work requires. Recently, an individually adapted made-to-measure collection has been added to the classic offering. We also gladly take on particularly demanding tasks, such as when a beloved inherited piece needs careful alterations.
