The Rettenbachklamm (gorge) in the east of Graz is the only gorge within the city and an extraordinary natural experience. Small waterfalls, moss-covered rocks, and dense vegetation featuring ferns and herbs characterize the scenery. Due to its special climate, the gorge remains pleasantly cool in the summer and offers a protected habitat for a diverse array of flora and fauna.
A gorge forest of beech, maple, and alder accompanies the hiking trail. Those who walk attentively may spot fire salamanders, bats, crayfish, or rare bird species – thus, the Rettenbachklamm is an important refuge for protected species.
The path requires sturdy footwear and, at some points, sure-footedness and basic fitness; however, the gorge can be hiked in about half an hour. For visitors who wish to continue, the Hike to the Platte offers impressive views over Graz as an extension.
The Rettenbach Gorge is easily accessible by public transport. A marked path (Steingrabenweg, route 85) leads directly from the tram terminal Waldhof of the Line 1 to the entrance of the gorge. Since parking spaces are limited, traveling by tram is particularly recommended.
