Parish Church Graz

The City Parish Church of Graz, officially known as the Propstei and City Parish Church of the Holy Blood, is one of the most significant sacred buildings that shape the historic Herrengasse.

Originally erected in 1440 on the initiative of Emperor Frederick III as a chapel, it was expanded into an impressive three-nave Gothic hall church during the 15th and early 16th centuries. The façade underwent a Baroque redesign in the 18th century, while the interior was designed in a Neo-Gothic style in the 19th century.

Particular attention is drawn to the stained glass windows by Albert Birkle. With their striking depictions of Nazi crimes, they are among the most notable artworks in the church. Also noteworthy are the Chapel of Saint John Nepomuk, a painting from the school of Tintoretto, and numerous epitaphs from several centuries.

The City Parish Church combines a Gothic floor plan, a Baroque façade, and Neo-Gothic furnishings into a structure of special character. With its location in the Herrengasse, it ranks among the prominent church buildings of Graz's old town.
