Museum of Prof. Franz Weiß
Voitsberg
Woodcuts, reverse glass paintings, and colorful glassworks showcase the immense creative power of Franz Weiss and invite encounters with his diverse body of work.
In the Tregist Valley between Voitsberg and Bärnbach, the Prof. Franz Weiß Museum is dedicated to the extensive work of one of the most well-known visual artists of Styria. Franz Weiß, born in 1921 and deceased in 2014, was closely connected to his homeland and was also referred to as the "Master from the Tregist Valley." Appropriately, the museum is located in the former Tregist primary school, very close to his family home.
On two floors, a diverse insight into Franz Weiß's artistic work is revealed. Painting and graphics were just as much a part of his oeuvre as sculpture and wood carving. Woodcutting held particular significance for him. More than 400 different motifs were created in this technique. In addition, the artist engaged in reverse glass painting, enamel works, stained glass, colored glass windows, as well as mosaic art and copper relief work.
The exhibition unites numerous woodcuts, reverse glass images, early works, and special glass works. In doing so, the museum not only showcases the diversity of his techniques but also conveys an impression of the great creative power that characterized Franz Weiß even into old age.
As a cultural excursion destination in the Lipizzaner region, the Prof. Franz Weiß Museum preserves the work of an artist closely connected to Western Styria. A visit invites one to get to know his various forms of expression and his unique visual language more closely.
