Gösting Castle Ruins

The Burgruine Gösting (Castle Ruins of Gösting) are located about 200 meters above the city and offer a view of the Graz Basin and the surrounding hills of East Styria. Built in the 11th century, the castle served for centuries as a watch point along old trade routes and as part of a fire warning system for defense against the Hungarians and Ottomans. Expansions into the 15th century shaped the current ruins structure, but in 1723, a lightning strike destroyed the powder magazine and largely set the castle on fire.

Remaining are the chapel, the keep, and parts of the original walls, which provide a good impression of the former fortress.

A well-maintained footpath of about 30 minutes from Schlossplatz Gösting leads past the so-called Jungfernsprung, where, according to legend, Anna von Gösting jumped into the depths out of love sorrow, to the platform with a view over the region.

Note: The castle tavern and access to the castle ruins remain permanently closed until further notice! There is also no access by car.
