Chinesischer Pavillon und Bischofsstuhl

Graz

Two quiet places at the Schlossberg.

Above the historic city of Graz, near the Bürgerbastei, stands the Chinese Pavilion – a delicate wooden structure that has been inviting visitors to pause since the late 19th century. It was built around 1890 on the site of an old wine arbor and reflects the then-popular Far Eastern style. From here, a wide view over the city opens up, making the pavilion one of the most popular viewpoints to this day.

Just a few steps away is the so-called Bishop's Chair – a stone bench with Gothic tracery and weathered inscriptions. An old legend surrounds it, stating that a bishop is said to have died here after years of captivity. Whether this is really true is uncertain, but the name has endured to this day.

Both locations are firmly part of the image of the Schlossberg. Those who find the way there are rewarded with tranquility, history, and a view that shows Graz in its most beautiful light.
