Buchhaus
Geistthal-Södingberg
The Buchhaus in Geistthal, a significant late medieval administrative building of the Cistercians, embodies the deep historical roots of the Graz Region in Styria.
The Buchhaus, located in the picturesque community of Geistthal within the Graz Region, is an architectural gem of Styria and one of the rare secular administrative buildings from the late Middle Ages. Originally constructed as the administrative seat of the Cistercian Monastery of Rein in 1538, it bears witness to the deep-rooted history of this region. Mag. Dr. phil. Ernst Lasnik, a renowned historian, describes the Buchhaus as one of the "most interesting late medieval buildings in the Middle Styria area," a statement that highlights the cultural significance of the building.
Over the centuries, the Buchhaus has served various purposes, from an agricultural operation to a scribe's office and even a prison during the witch trials in the late 1680s. Special architectural features such as the robust stone masonry, partially integrated into the rock, and the Baroque statue of Saint Kummernus, testify to the historical and cultural importance of the building.
Today, the Buchhaus is not only a monument to the past but also a vibrant part of the community. The current restoration and preservation measures aim to maintain the historical appearance of the Buchhaus and preserve it as a living cultural heritage. By organizing cultural events and private celebrations through the Geistthal Cultural Association, history is kept alive and the community strengthened. Interested parties can also book tours to learn more about the Buchhaus and the fascinating history of Geistthal.
