Stage 3 Grazer Bergland Hiking Trail: Übelbach – Deutschfeistritz – Peggau
Accessible by public transport- Train (within 15 minutes walking distance from starting point)
Characteristics
SkillThe tour in numbers
With the support of the Austrian Federal Government, the State of Styria and the European Union (LEADER).
The stage begins in Übelbach (580 m), a town with a long history of silver and copper mining. Historic trade routes still reflect the region’s former economic importance. In addition to the Grazer Bergland Hiking Trail, several themed trails explore the surrounding landscape.
After a steeper climb, the route continues along wooded ridges and open sections in a calmer elevation profile. Wayside crosses and shrines line the trail. There are no huts along this stage, but natural rest spots provide space for a break.
At Schartnerkogel (931 m), a wide plateau opens with views across the Grazer Bergland. The stage then descends towards Deutschfeistritz (430 m). The Kirchberg with its parish church offers an additional viewpoint. The Sensenwerk recalls the region’s industrial heritage.
The final section continues to Peggau-Deutschfeistritz railway station.

More information
The stage begins at Übelbach railway station (580 m). The route first passes through the town and under the motorway bridge before a longer climb through forested terrain begins.
Via Taschlerkreuz, the trail reaches open alpine meadows with wide views. It then continues eastwards along the ridge on forest roads and broad paths. Numerous wayside crosses such as Hiednerkreuz, Ederkreuz and Wartkogelkreuz shape the landscape. A memorial stone with a cross above Vlg. Sprinzelhofer also lies directly along the route.
The trail alternates between open cultural landscapes with panoramic views and dense woodland sections. The final ascent leads up to Schartnerkogel (931 m), whose plateau opens wide views across the Grazer Bergland.
The descent follows mostly narrow forest paths down to Deutschfeistritz (404 m). From there, the route continues through the town, across the River Mur and on to Peggau-Deutschfeistritz railway station (410 m).
