An enjoyable hike through alpine meadows and forests to Reinischkogel, with a peace chapel, peace bell and the refreshing Papstbründl along the way.

This 12 km hike from Hoiswirt to Reinischkogel combines forest trails, alpine meadows and quiet forestry roads. Via Schrogentor, the route climbs to the Reinischkogel summit (1,463 m), with its peace chapel, peace bell and summit cross.

The return route passes through forests and meadows, with the Papstbründl spring offering a unique place for a short break. The hike includes around 510 metres of elevation gain.

From Vienna, Graz or Klagenfurt, take the A2 motorway to the Modriach exit. Continue to the Hoiswirt ski lifts

Parking is available at Hoiswirt inn and the Hoisliften ski lifts.

From Hoiswirt, trail 569 initially follows a paved road uphill. After the crest, a forest path branches off, crossing a pasture and wetter ground with wooden walkways. A gravel road then leads towards Schrogentor (1,255 m).

Beyond Schrogentor, the route follows a farm track before trail 36 branches left into the forest. At the next junction, turn right onto trail 551 towards Reinischkogel. Across a meadow and along a short forest path, the route reaches the Reinischkogel summit cross (1,463 m) and the Peace Chapel with its peace bell.

The return follows trail 568 back to the junction with trail 36. Forest and meadow paths continue towards Hoiswirt. Near the Papst farm, trail 36a branches off and descends through the forest to Papstbründl, a good spot for a short break.

The route then continues along a gravel road and later a paved road. At the junction, follow the signs carefully: the continuing forest trail towards Hoiswirt is on the opposite side of the road from the trail signs. A short climb and a forest and meadow path lead back to the starting point.

Reinischkogel with its summit cross and Peace Chapel, plus the drinks spring along the route. In Modriach, the Steirarodl summer toboggan run is worth a visit, while Packer Reservoir offers a refreshing break on warm days.
