An American Dream in String Sound

The Adagio by Samuel Barber has become the hauntingly beautiful piece of mourning in cinema through Hollywood. Mei-Ann Chen combines it with Stravinsky's joyful Concerto for a Park in Washington and with a furious string dance by New Yorker Jessie Montgomery: She conjures a kaleidoscope of captivating rhythms and melodies from the "twang," the "strum" of the plucked strings. Michael Hell demonstrates how differently a harpsichord sounds when Phil Glass spreads his "Minimal Music" over it.
