New Year's concert - La Bella Italia!
Opera Graz and the Philharmonic celebrate the new year musically – entirely in the spirit of Spain.
Between fire and melancholy, this is how one might describe the essence of Spanish music. We perhaps feel a similarly broad spectrum of emotions at the turn of the year: energy for the new and regret for the time that has irreversibly passed. With works by Spanish composers such as Manuel de Falla, Enrique Granados, and Joaquín Turina, the Graz Philharmonic and ensemble member Anna Brull, under the direction of chief conductor Vassilis Christopoulos, guide us through a spirited New Year's program. Particularly through elements of dance such as Flamenco, Pasodoble, or Jota, Spanish rhythms and melodies also found their way into French music of the 19th century. Between the 1870s and World War I, there was a veritable enthusiasm for Spain in France, which inspired composers like Emmanuel Chabrier, Claude Debussy, and Maurice Ravel to create works with thematic as well as musical references to their neighboring country.
