Musical: Tom Sawyer

Friendship, courage, and the first steps into adulthood shape the family musical “Tom Sawyer” at the Graz Opera. The colorful production connects Mark Twain's well-known adventure story with music by Kurt Weill and a large orchestra.

Tom Sawyer is considered an incorrigible scamp by his Aunt Polly. Together with his best friend Huckleberry Finn, he embarks on numerous adventures on the Mississippi and usually finds a clever solution to difficult situations. However, when Tom and Huck witness a crime, their carefree time comes to an abrupt end. Tom must decide whether to name the true perpetrator and prove his own courage. At the same time, Becky, the newcomer in town, brings additional heart flutter.

Kurt Weill had designed five songs for a “Tom Sawyer” musical shortly before his death. Based on further compositions by the music theater composer, the unfinished work was expanded into a family musical in two acts. The production from the Komische Oper Berlin premiered in 2023 and was subsequently presented as the Austrian premiere in Graz.

Now the production by Tobias Ribitzki returns to the Graz Opera. On the main stage, the Graz Philharmonic, the extras, and the opera's singing school will perform alongside the soloists. The German-language musical is aimed at audiences aged six and up and lasts about two hours. Performances are scheduled from October to November 2026.
