Ikarus

High above Crete, Icarus dares to dream of freedom – a flight between unbridled adventure and looming disaster. The ancient myth, in which Icarus comes too close to the sun, serves as the starting point for the dance piece by the Crete-born choreographer Andonis Foniadakis. He tells of longing and transgression, of the search for weightlessness and the hubris of humanity. An intense, poetic play of risk, intoxication, and transience.

Andonis Foniadakis captures the essence of the narrative and combines his unmistakable movement language with elements of traditional Cretan dances. Driven by the question of how far one can go without failing, he creates a powerful, expansive choreography that seems to suspend time and gravity for a moment. It becomes a breathless reminder of how closely freedom and danger lie together.

“I follow the energy of the characters, their emotions, their state of soul, their physical and mental condition. What fear accompanies them on their escape? What exhilaration do they feel while ascending? And how disastrous must it feel to fail? I try to translate all these sensations into movement,” says Foniadakis about his work. He is now re-studying his internationally acclaimed production, premiered in Hanover, with the dancers of the Ballet Graz.
