Film: David Byrne True Stories
David Byrne's cult film "True Stories" combines satirical humor, Americana, and the playful postmodern aesthetics of the 1980s in the Hall for Art Styria.
Admission is free!
With "True Stories," Talking Heads frontman David Byrne created a film in 1986 that uniquely captures the playful, postmodern aesthetic of the 1980s. The Halle für Kunst Steiermark is showcasing the satirical comedy musical as part of a film screening.
Byrne serves as the narrator through the fictional small town of Virgil in Texas, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary with the "Celebration of Specialness." With a surreal perspective, the film scrutinizes American small-town life, the American Dream, and consumer culture. Everyday scenes blend with nostalgia and longing, while kitsch and absurd humor sharply exaggerate the peculiarities of American society in the 1980s. The film is shown in English, with English subtitles.
At the same time, "True Stories" develops a warm-hearted and dreamy vision of Americana. The deliberately kitschy imagery of this underground classic is connected to an aesthetic that also resonates in the work of Katherine Bernhardt.
The film screening begins on October 15 at 6:00 p.m. in the Halle für Kunst Steiermark. Admission is free, and no registration is required.
Access is possible via tram lines 1 and 7, as well as bus lines 30, 31, and 39, stopping at Oper / Kaiser-Josef-Platz.
