Eröffnungskonzert der Oper Graz !-"Ewig!"
Concert with the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra and soloists from Graz Opera!
Opening concert "Eternally!" at the Opera Graz
With his 5th Symphony, Franz Schubert created a mature work at the age of 19. The unusually small orchestration, without clarinets, trumpets, and kettledrums, reminds – like some of the motifs and harmonies – of the music of his famous predecessor Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Under the musical direction of the internationally successful conductor Giedrė Šlekytė, who completed her conducting studies at, among others, the University of Arts Graz, the Graz Philharmonic will dedicate the second part of the concert to the symphonic song cycle The Song of the Earth, which Gustav Mahler composed just three years before his early death. Mahler wrote the six movements based on the poetry collection The Chinese Flute by Hans Bethge. Especially the last, nearly 30-minute movement "Farewell," which fades away with the words "eternally ... eternally ...," lingers long afterward. In a letter to Anton Webern, his fellow composer Alban Berg stated: "It is like the passing of life, better the lived one, on the soul of the dying. The artwork condenses; the actual evaporates, the idea remains; so are these songs."
