Intensive colors, radical image compositions, and a distinctive visual language: Katherine Bernhardt is among the most independent positions in contemporary American painting. On January 7, HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark in Graz will present the publication for her first institutional solo exhibition in Europe. An exhibition tour with Sandro Droschl will accompany the Book Launch.
Bernhardt's expressive painting moves between pop culture, a globalized consumer world, and visual overload. Her works reflect the flood of images of the present and translate them into powerful, color-intensive paintings. As a result, surprising visual worlds emerge where everyday motifs and painterly freedom encounter each other.
The new publication gathers key works from recent years and offers an in-depth engagement with Bernhardt's artistic creation. Even the unusual German title condenses essential aspects of her painting: neon, color, blending, luminance, impact, paintings, retina, collision, and danger. The coined term refers to an art that challenges perceptual habits and plays with visual intensity.
With contributions from Katherine Bernhardt and Joe Bradley, Sandro Droschl, and Samuel Witt, the catalog opens up various art theoretical and personal perspectives on her work.
The accompanying exhibition tour with Sandro Droschl provides an opportunity to explore Bernhardt's visual language directly in front of the original works and discover new connections between artistic practice, perception, and contemporary culture.
