Parks & gardens in Graz

Graz has a second layer of green. Between the old town, the Schlossberg and the residential districts, parks, gardens and hillside landscapes open up, loosening the urban fabric. Paths lead through mature trees, along water surfaces and across sunlit terraces.

These places are part of everyday life — meeting point, retreat and space for movement. They connect architecture with landscape and lend the city its perceptible sense of openness.

Burggarten

Behind the Graz Burg lies the Burggarten — quiet and almost hidden. Maintained paths, lawns and the former orangery define its restrained character.

Stadtpark

Between Opernring and the university district, the Stadtpark opens up as Graz’s green centre. Mature trees, wide lawns, and the Stadtpark fountain give the space its structure.

Herberstein Garden

On the southern slope of the Schlossberg, terraces extend through the Herberstein Garden. Walls and pathways follow the terrain, repeatedly opening up views across the city.

Augarten & Stadtstrand

Between Jakomini and Gries, the Augarten lies directly along the Mur. Open lawns frame the view towards the water.

The Graz City Beach complements the riverbank during the warmer months. Raft trips and boat hire make the Mur directly accessible.

Murpromenade

The Mur promenade connects neighbourhoods along the water. Along the riverbank, spaces emerge for conversation, music and summer evenings.

Eggenberg Palace Park

The park of Eggenberg Palace follows Baroque sightlines and expansive lawns. The Planet Garden and Rose Garden introduce carefully placed accents within the landscape.

From spring to autumn, peacocks roam freely throughout the grounds.

Hilmteich

At the edge of the Leechwald, the Hilmteich forms a calm waterside setting. Circular paths trace the shoreline, where forest and city meet in close proximity.

In winter, the surface becomes an ice-skating area.

Rosenhain

Rosenhain stretches across a sunny hillside above Graz. Open meadows transition into beech forest, with paths leading through both light-filled and shaded areas.

From here, views extend far across the city.

Botanical Garden

Amid Art Nouveau villas near the university, the greenhouses of the Botanical Garden sit within the greenery as distinct architectural forms.

Plants from different climate zones meet contemporary architecture here.
