North of the Styrian capital of Graz, gentle hills rise and gradually unfold into the impressive Gleinalm and Hochalm ranges. The Gleinalm is home to the highest peak of the Graz Region, the Gleinalm-Speikkogel, which, at 1,988 metres, proudly bears the title “Top of the Region.”

The hiking trails of this area lead past historic castle ruins, a mysterious bear cave, majestic churches, the Cistercian Abbey of Rein, and the fascinating Austrian Open-Air Museum in Stübing. Beautiful gardens and the cool depths of the Lurgrotte cave offer ever-changing impressions and a welcome moment of refreshment.

Grazer Bergland Hiking Trail

The Grazer Bergland Hiking Trail is a new premium circular long-distance hiking route consisting of six daily stages, leading through the LEADER region north of Graz. The tours largely follow well-established trails maintained by alpine associations (ÖAV, NF, ÖTK) and wind their way through breathtaking landscapes, reaching several scenic summits along the way.

The aim of this trail is to bring the culture, nature, and identity of the Grazer Bergland vividly to life—step by step, experience by experience.

Stage Overview

The daily stages range from 14 to 20 kilometres, with an average of around 500 metres of elevation gain, while the most challenging stage features more than 1,000 metres of ascent. All starting and finishing points are easily accessible by public transport, making both overnight stays and arrival and departure simple to organise.
