Challenging MTB tour from Maria Lankowitz up to the Stubalpe and the Altes Almhaus with a demanding descent back to the valley.

The Altes Almhaus Tour 182 - MTB starts at the pilgrimage church in Maria Lankowitz and climbs steadily into the alpine landscape of the Stubalpe.

The route follows quiet side roads as well as forest and gravel tracks, linking the valley with high alpine terrain in the Lipizzanerheimat. The ascent leads to the Altes Almhaus, a key destination in this elevated area.

The descent requires good riding skills and focus. Via the Alte Weinstraße and the Hangweg, the route drops around 1200 vertical metres back to Maria Lankowitz. The downhill sections are demanding and best suited for experienced mountain bikers who enjoy long technical descents.

Köflach - Maria Lankowitz

Start and finish:
Pilgrimage church Maria Lankowitz , alternative starts at municipal office, Puchbacherstraße or Pibersteinersee
Puchbacherstraße – Grabenmühle – Hochgößnitzweg – Pechgrabenweg
Forest roads along the Gössnitzbach – right over wooden bridge onto Hangweg
Left onto Hochbundschuhweg – climb to the Altes Almhaus

Hochbundschuhweg – right onto hiking trail no. 546
Partly on no. 51 to Kirchberg
Follow signs and GPX track – narrow and steeper sections
Kirchbergstraße – past St. Johann church – back to Maria Lankowitz

Stop for drinks at the self service Bier Tresor Hochbundschuh Sonneisner during the ascent. Bring coins.
Short walk to the Marian statue on Wölkerkogel or to Brandkogel and the Lipizzaner pastures. Refreshments at the Altes Almhaus.
In summer cool down at Pibersteinersee.

By train:
Access by S-Bahn line 7 (S7) from Graz to Köflach with bike transport. Cycling time from the station to the MTB tour start is approx. 10 minutes.

Travel notice:
Due to electrification works, the Graz–Köflach railway line will be temporarily closed in 2026 and 2027. Replacement services will operate without bicycle transport.
