Rothenfels Castle in the Wölzertal is one of the few medieval castles which has retained its original appearance to this day. Its name derives from the iron-rich, reddish conglomerate rock over which it rises.

Rothenfels Castle was first documented in 1007 Mentioned on the occasion of the donation of Oberwölz to the bishops of Freising.

Bookable additional Services

Until 1803, the castle was the administrative headquarters for the surrounding areas and belonged to the Bishopric of Freising. After 1803, various private owners took care of the preservation. Since 1968 Fam. Steiner are owners of Rothenfels Castle.
