Johnsbach and its cave

As soon as the headlamps are on, the tour through the cave may begin. Add to that some good shoes and a warm jacket and off you go into the dark cave. Besides Kraushöhle Cave, Odelsteinhöhle Cave is definitely another great fixture of the Gesäuse – especially for visitors interested in geology, rocks and exploring caves! It is located in the remote Johnsbachtal Valley at 1085 m and is famous for its beautiful greenish-blue aragonite crystals. Paying a visit to the Odelsteinhöhle Cave, which actually forms part of a 470-metre-long cave system, definitely pays off. Among other things, you will discover iron, copper and ore deposits. The latter can be found in the area of the Erzberg Mountain, around Radmer and Johnsbach.

The cave’s discovery was made a long time ago and it was declared a natural monument back in 1931. Today, the Odelsteinhöhle Cave can only be visited with a guide.
